The Windsor Lodge and Hotel is a fusion of modern comforts and colonial splendor. It was built as a quaint hunting lodge in 1909 in the midst of a forest that was then rich in wild life. Over the years, it transformed itself into a favorite retreat of the British elite and Indian feudal class looking for a pleasant sojourn close to nature. The Windsor Lodge and Hotel today comprises three restored buildings which seamlessly mingle in the backdrop of snowcapped peaks and thick forest of pine and cedar. Perched on a hillock, it commands a 360 degree view, and overlooks the nine hole Ranikhet Golf Course on one side and has a stunning view of the Himalayan peaks, such as Nanda Devi, Trishul, PanchChuli (on clear days),on the other. This heritage property is situated in Kalika Estate, village Dadgallia, just outside the Ranikhet cantonment limits. It is connected by an all weather 300 meter long pucca road, which branches off from the Ranikhet-Almora highway. Ranikhet, (over 6000 feet above sea level) is acclaimed as a heavenly hill station, and one of the best in the world. It offers the pleasure of golf, besides long and short walks and beautiful picnic spots.Discovered and build entirely by the British in 1869, European tourists, ever since, have enthused ecstatically over its valleys, meadows, cliffs, hills, surrounding snow capped mountains and lush green forest cover. The town is essentially a cantonment, the only one in the country to enjoy heritage status. Strict army regulations have helped it remain encroachment free and retain its green cover. It is always spic and span and has litter free roads. Its a destination for those craving for uninterrupted solitude in the midst of scintillating beauty where nature proclaims its supremacy over man. How to get there: Nearest Airport: Pant Nagar (100 kms) Nearest Railhead: Kathgodam (88 kms) By Road from Delhi: Drive via Nizamuddin Bridge, Hapur, Moradabad, Rampur, Bilaspur, Ruderpur, Haldwani, Kathgodam, Bhimtal, Bhowali and Khairna (approx driving time is 8 to 9 hours) After reaching Ranikhet: Enter Ranikhet Cantonment and take Ranikhet - Almora Road. After the cantonment ends you will find yourself driving through Ranikhet Golf Course. After the Golf Course ends, drive for about 200 mtrs. Just before the Kalika Temple and Srivastava Hospital, a small road branches off on your left. Take this side road and drive for about 300 mtrs. The road ends in Windsor Lodge and Hotel.
