Situated in the Tamil Quarter of Puducherry, the old house, get its name from Rue Perumal Kovil, the street that is situated on, and is one of the rare heritage structures that has been restored in this quarter. The maisons traditional Tamil personality comes through in its two courtyards, the thalvaram (street verandah) and the thinnai (veranda around the house). The fluted pilaster and arched windows give it a French charm. With just 10 rooms, Maison Perumal has a very cosy feel. The resort has a small staff, who manage the place like a home. And because it is a melting pot of cultures, Puducherry is known for its restaurants. Maison Perumal serves Creole cuisine, which is the typical amalgamation of French and Tamil flavours. At the restaurant, too, food is prepared and served with a homely warmth. So, you could probably take a tip or two from the chef or server, who will explain the spread at the table.
