Description
Nizamabad is the largest commercial and trading centre in the district of the same name, in Andhra Pradesh. The city was named after the Nizam of Hyderabad, Asaf Jah VI in 1905 and it was called Indurpuri before that. In the medieval times, Nizamabad was ruled by the Rashtrakutas dynasty. In 1905 the British constructed an important railway line connecting Hyderabad and Mumbai that served as North South corridor, with Nizamabad as a major station on the line. The National Highway No. 7, which connects Kanyakumari to Varanasi also runs through this city.
Nizamabad has a number of outdoor attractions like the Nizam Sagar Dam built across the Manjira River, the Ali Sagar Reservoir built in the days of the Nizam, Pochampadu Project, and the Pocharam Sanctuary. Located on a hill southwest of the town, Nizamabad also has a fort that dates back to the 10th century AD and many Jain artifacts have been found here.
There is also a temple called the Sri Neelakanteshwara Shrine which is built in the Jain style of architecture. Other holy places are the Kentu .
