Ongole is the headquarters of Prakasam district in Andhra Pradesh. The town was originally called Vangalaprolu, Vangavolu and Vangolu after the astrologer bearing the surname Vangolu in the court of the Addanki kings. Ongole finds its references in the inscriptions of Pallava rulers, Vijayaskandavarma and Simhavarman who ruled the city between 3rd and 4th century AD.
